8 Clean Concealers: All Tried, Tested, and Reviewed

If you’re making the switch to clean beauty, you might be thinking about the best non toxic concealer.

I know I was over the past two years where I have switched out most of my makeup collection for less-toxic products.

Why did I switch to clean beauty?

I used to be beauty-obsessed, making Sephora orders weekly and constantly knee-deep in beauty YouTube.

However, when my first son was born in 2019, I realized I didn’t want to snuggle him with a full face of makeup. I didn’t want to kiss his precious little head with a mouth full of lipstick.

So I started reducing my makeup collection significantly. At first I didn’t know what to wear or what was safe. I slowly started switching products that I wore most often for more natural alternatives.

After extensive ingredient education, I’ve learned more about the ingredients that go in products (you can skip to the end of this article to read more about them if you are interested) and what I personally wanted to avoid.

Like blush, concealer is one of my favorites and most used beauty products. I wear them both pretty much everyday even if I skip other steps.

Needless to say, I have tested a ton of products over the years, especially since making the switch to clean beauty. Literally I have owned thousands of makeup products (just check out my inventory videos on YouTube).

I need to know that the products last on the skin and perform well. No one likes a cakey or dry concealer, that is for sure.

There are actually a lot of amazing non toxic concealer picks on the market now. As companies are becoming more aware of ingredients in makeup, they are formulating amazing products.

Other clean concealers that I don’t personally recommend:

  • Saie Hydrabeam Brightening and Highlighting Under Eye Concealer: I found this concealer to be far too oily and it never truly set down which I did not like. I actually returned it because I thought it was so bad and I only do that when I feel the product was not accurately advertised.
  • ILIA True Skin Serum Concealer with Vitamin C: This concealer left a lot to be desired for me. The coverage and lasting power were both not great.

I love other products from these brands but these concealers were not it for me.

Ingredient Education

What are some harmful ingredients in concealer to look out for?

There are several harmful ingredients that may be found in makeup products. Here are some of the most commonly known ones:

  1. Parabens – These are preservatives used in many cosmetic products to prevent bacterial growth. However, they have been linked to breast cancer and hormonal imbalances.
  2. Phthalates – These chemicals are used to make plastic more flexible and can be found in nail polish, hair spray, and perfume. They have been linked to developmental and reproductive issues.
  3. Formaldehyde – This is a preservative used in some nail polish and hair products. It can cause allergic reactions and has been linked to cancer.
  4. Talc – Talc is a mineral that is often found in face powders and eye shadows. It has been linked to ovarian cancer when used in the genital area. A November 2020 study found that 14% of makeup products containing talc also contained asbestos.
  5. Lead – Lead is a toxic heavy metal that has been found in some lipsticks and other makeup products. It can cause neurological damage and developmental issues.
  6. Synthetic fragrances – These are often added to cosmetics to enhance their scent. However, they can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.

It’s important to read the ingredient list on your makeup products and avoid using products that contain these harmful ingredients. Look for natural and organic makeup products or products that are labeled “paraben-free,” “phthalate-free,” and “fragrance-free.”

BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene)

BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are synthetic antioxidants that are commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products to prevent the oxidation and spoilage of the product.

The use of BHA and BHT in makeup has raised concerns because they can be harmful to human health in certain circumstances.

Here are some reasons why:

  1. Carcinogenicity: There is some evidence to suggest that BHA and BHT may be carcinogenic, or cancer-causing. Studies have shown that both BHA and BHT can cause tumors in laboratory animals.
  2. Endocrine disruption: BHA and BHT can disrupt the endocrine system, which regulates hormones in the body. This can lead to developmental and reproductive issues, including reduced fertility.
  3. Skin irritation: BHA and BHT can also cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in some people, especially those with sensitive skin.
  4. Environmental concerns: BHA and BHT can accumulate in the environment and have been found in water and soil. This can have harmful effects on aquatic organisms and wildlife.

It is important to note that the use of BHA and BHT in cosmetics is regulated by government agencies, such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA has determined that these chemicals are generally safe for use in cosmetics at low levels. However, some people may choose to avoid products that contain BHA and BHT due to their potential health and environmental concerns.

What about PEGs (polyethylene glycols)?

PEGs (polyethylene glycols) are a group of synthetic chemicals commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products as emulsifiers, thickeners, and moisture carriers. They are often used in products such as makeup, lotions, and cleansers.

PEGs have raised some concerns in the cosmetics industry because they can be harmful to human health and the environment in certain circumstances.

Here are some reasons why:

  1. Skin irritation: PEGs can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in some people, especially those with sensitive skin.
  2. Contamination: PEGs can be contaminated with harmful impurities and carcinogens, such as ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, during the manufacturing process. These impurities are known to cause cancer and other health problems.
  3. Environmental concerns: PEGs can contribute to water pollution when they are washed off and enter the water supply. They can also have harmful effects on aquatic organisms and wildlife.
  4. Penetration enhancers: PEGs are sometimes used as penetration enhancers in cosmetics, which means they can help other chemicals penetrate the skin more deeply. This can increase the risk of other harmful ingredients in cosmetics entering the bloodstream.

It is important to note that the use of PEGs in cosmetics is regulated by government agencies, such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA has determined that PEGs are generally safe for use in cosmetics at low levels. However, some people may choose to avoid products that contain PEGs due to their potential health and environmental concerns.

Why are phthalates bad in makeup?

Phthalates are a group of chemicals commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products as plasticizers, which help to improve the texture, flexibility, and durability of the product. They are often used in products such as nail polish, hair spray, and fragrances.

Phthalates have raised concerns in the cosmetics industry because they can be harmful to human health in certain circumstances. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Endocrine disruption: Phthalates can disrupt the endocrine system, which regulates hormones in the body. This can lead to developmental and reproductive issues, including reduced fertility, premature birth, and birth defects.
  2. Carcinogenicity: Some phthalates have been linked to cancer in laboratory animals, although the evidence is less clear in humans.
  3. Skin irritation: Phthalates can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in some people, especially those with sensitive skin.
  4. Environmental concerns: Phthalates can accumulate in the environment and have been found in water and soil. This can have harmful effects on aquatic organisms and wildlife.

5 Tips For Applying The Best Non Toxic Concealer

Non-toxic or organic concealers are makeup products that are made with natural or plant-based ingredients, and they are generally free from harmful chemicals and toxins that can irritate the skin or cause allergic reactions.

Here are some things to keep in mind when using non-toxic or organic concealers:

  1. Understand the ingredients: Read the label carefully and familiarize yourself with the ingredients used in the product. Look for plant-based ingredients such as organic oils, iron oxides, olive oil, cocoa butter, castor seed oil, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, chamomile, jojoba oil, and organic coconut oil, and avoid products that contain synthetic fragrances, parabens, sulfates, and phthalates.
  2. Apply with care: Apply the concealer with a light hand and blend it well into the skin. Avoid applying too much product, as this can look cakey and unnatural.
  3. Choose the right shade: Choose a shade that matches your skin tone or is one shade lighter for under-eye circles. Test the concealer on your jawline or inner wrist to make sure it matches your skin tone.
  4. Patch test: If you have sensitive skin, it’s important to do a patch test before using a new product. Apply a small amount of the concealer to the inside of your wrist and wait for 24 hours to see if you have any adverse reactions.
  5. They have shorter shelf life: Because non toxic concealers are not full of potentially harmful preservatives they typically have a shelf life of about 6 months. Keep this in mind before buying more than you can use in that time!

You might also have to try a few before you mind the best concealer for you!

In Summary: The Best Non Toxic Concealer

While there are many potentially harmful chemicals and additives in makeup, there are plenty of brands aiming to offer us less harmful options!
