25 Eco Friendly Baby Clothes Brands For Your Baby

Are you looking for eco friendly baby clothes for your baby? Here are 25+ plus brands that are made with eco friendly materials, sustainably made, and use fair trade practices in manufacturing!

There’s no doubt that the baby clothes industry is booming. Parents everywhere love dressing their kids in cute clothes. And this industry comes at quite the cost to the environment. Around 26 billion pounds of chidren’s textiles enter landfill each year.

In the past, it was hard to find eco friendly baby clothes. The textile industry is full of pesticides, heavy metals, toxic chemicals and dyes, and unfair labor practices. There weren’t many brands using eco (and baby) friendly materials.

But now there are many brands making the effort for more sustainable practices, including fair trade and ethical manufacturing, and reducing the use of chemical processing.

Eco-Friendly Materials

Some of the best materials for eco-friendly baby clothes are organic cotton and bamboo. In recent years, there have been some questionable practices around bamboo making many question its true sustainability. It depends very much how the bamboo is grown and treated as to whether or not it is truly eco-friendly.

On the other hand, organic cotton is strictly regulated and held to high standards. There are a few certifications for organic cotton worth looking out for:

  • GOTS-certified: Stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. The standard is based on organic fibers, ecological and social criteria, all processing stages, and third-party certification.
  • OKEO-TEK: Designed for the responsible management of chemicals in every stage of production, companies have to be tested and certified. In short, the fabric has been thoroughly tested for the presence of toxic chemicals.

When you see either of these labels on a brand, they reach the high standards set out by these parties. Without these labels companies can call something “organic” and they only need to contain a small amount of organic fibers while the rest can be almost anything.

Why Pick Eco Friendly Baby Clothes?

Choosing to put your baby in eco friendly baby clothes is better for them and for the planet.

Recyclable fibers like organic cotton and bamboo become part of the circular economy and can be recycled and repurposed instead of ending up in landfills. They often last longer and get more use than conventionally produced clothing.

Additionally, traditionally produced fabrics like conventional cotton can contain harmful chemicals and pesticides. Recent research has even found phthalates (hormone disrupting chemicals used to make plastics more flexible) and heavy metals in infant clothing. This is scary that we are potentially putting our babies at risk unknowingly!

Ethical Production and Sustainability Practices

It’s also important to support brands that pay their factory workers a living wage. There are lots of places along the supply chain that provide opportunities for ethical and fair trade production. Not all of this information is readily available but many companies who sell organic clothing and use natural fibers are also working to ensure their products are made ethically. It’s always a work in progress.

It’s also nice to purchase from brands that care about their carbon footprint and work towards being carbon neutral.
